I am trying to install the asp version of webmail lite as a test to see if the full version is worth it. I transfered the files to the server (not dedicated but has sql and .net 2.0 installed supposedly) but when i go to install it displays an error message.

Isn't error message self-explaining? If the IIS virtual directory is not configured as a web application, it obviously cannot run web applications.

I would also add that some hosting providers offer interface to control virtual directories and IIS applications, and if it's not your case you'll need to ask your host to create IIS application for your WebMail Lite install.

Please note that WebMail Lite is not a trial version of WebMail Pro, it's basically a different application. Thus, it may be a good idea to install evaluation copy of WebMail Pro instead, either 30-days trial or permanent 5-users license.
