Can I just encrypt & sign a file and then simply attach it to the mail.

SMIME standard requires entire e-mail message to be signed or/and encrypted. So it's not possible to sign/encrypt just a file and attach it to a message, i.e. only e-mail messages can be signed/encrypted. If you have a signed/encrypted message saved as an .eml file, you may attach it to another e-mail message as attachment.

 Best regards,
 Andrew

It would be great if you could provide signfile using attached & detached signature. It will really add lot of value.

In S/MIME both sender and recepient need to posess a certificate. Many end user client who use free servies like yahoo, gmail may not be willing to buy a certificate.

So we have decided to sign the file and encrypt it using ZIP encryption.

Other compoents like ASPEncrypt does have this.

Yes, I understand. But they are different products, encryption of arbitrary data is somewhat different from email components and S/MIME. Maybe we'll develop such a product someday, but it won't be a mail component. To the moment, our focus is email oriented software.

 Alex
