In my settings I have
Notify me of replies to posts = yes
but when I leave a post in a thread for the first time, it does not automatically subscribe me to the thread and I have to manually add myself.
Also, if I leave a new post in a thread I am already subscribed to, it will unsubscribe me, so I have to re-subscribe to the thread manually everytime I leave a post.

This forum engine's version is quite outdated, so some bugs might be there. We are planning to perform an upgrade, but due to large number of customizations, we're not sure when this can be done.
The weird thing is, other people seem to get notifications just fine. Thus, could be that your email service has something to do with this. Try setting up another forum account, using email account offered by different service, and see if you get those notifications.

It has nothing to do with my email account... as I am writing this reply, down at the bottom of the screen it says "Un-Watch this topic for replies".
I am going to post this reply and then tell you what happens...

Ok, so I just posted the reply above, and as I am writing this reply, down at the bottom of screen it now says "Watch this topic for replies".
So for some reason, it unsubscribes me everytime I post something. After I post the reply, I will click Watch This Topic to re-subscribe and I will receive emails just fine.

Do you get notifications if you don't click that "Watch this topic.." link? I must say, I have never really noticed that link, did not click it and still I receive all the responses. To my opinion, the point of that link is to be used by some third person who wants to be notified, while thread's author and those who respond would receive notifications anyway.

If I do not click the link, then I do not receive any responses. Just to confirm, I will not click it after I post and then check back to see if you replies later.

No, I did not receive an email notification for the above reply (because I did not click on Watch This Topic).
Under SETTINGS and Email Notification Subscriptions, if I click Watch This Topic, the thread will show up. As soon as I post a reply, the thread gets removed from Email Notification Subscriptions and I have to click Watch This Topic again to add it back to the list.
