I have seen the FAQ about search/sort not working in direct mode. Is there any way to override this and
use the IMAP server's built in features? I'm running a mail server on some very underpowered hardware,
but it runs well with Dovecot.

I understand that having a separate database insulates you from a bad IMAP server, but it's a kludge.
Indexes are built and maintained twice. Messages are stored twice. An additional service has to be tuned
and maintained. It's enough to bog our server down, even though it's handling IMAP nicely.

What if you have a good IMAP server? I would like to know if there is code anywhere (official or not) that
would let me access the server's built-in features. Would it be difficult to implement?

Thank you. It's obsolete information in the FAQ. We'll fix it.

Search/sort is working by default in direct mode if the IMAP server support these features.

If it's not work in you case, please give us a test account on your webmail installation.
