I've had webmail lite installed and running smoothly until last week. The hosting went kaput due to an apache kernel problem last week and since the hosting came back, I've been unable to login to user accounts on webmail lite. When I try to login I get this message "Wrong email/login and/or password. Authentication failed." I can login to the pop3 accounts using webmail such as roundcube, so the account login credentials are fine.
Unfortunately, the host won't budge from their very unhelpful position of "we've changed nothing" when it's pretty clear that something's changed.
Any pointers as to any special permissions, user privileges or php modules that should be investigated?

The first thing to check through is debug log files. Logging is enabled in AdminPanel, so tick the option and make sure the issue is reflected in the logs. There's a very good chance that studying the information reflected in the log file would shed light on the main reason of the issue you encountered.
Also, please note that while some mail servers require full email address as login, others need just the username for that, so you might need to adjust login page settings.
