The docs says the 'Last' command is deprecated. What's the new method of getting new messages only or do I have to keep track myself?

The latest revision of the POP3 protocol (RFC 1725)claimed LAST command deprecated but did not introduce any replacement. You should either keep track of old messages storing their UIDs in database or use IMAP4 protocol instead.
