AfterLogic WebMail isn't really email service, it's actually email client you install onto a web server, and once you have it configured, you will be able to access your email account(s) via web browser.
Of course, it can be used for providing email service to others - as long as email accounts exist on the server already. AfterLogic WebMail can only be used for accessing existing accounts, it doesn't provide self-signup or password reset features.

As a new user, I'm curious as to what makes Afterlogic Webmail stand out from competing email providers.

Thanks for clearing up the difference between the client and the service, that makes sense now.
For those running this in 2025, how does Afterlogic compare to free alternatives like Roundcube or RainLoop these days? I'm looking for something self-hosted, but I'm wondering if the paid 'Pro' features (like the mobile sync) are the main reason people choose this over the open-source options?

Hello,
From a support person's point of view, I believe I could name a few reasons why people choose to go with the Pro version. The reasons aren't in any particular order; it's not my place to suggest which reason is more important for a specific customer, still I wish to share a few thoughts from my experience.
First of all, when it comes to free alternatives, we do offer one ourselves - WebMail Lite is a community edition of Afterlogic WebMail. It's free opensource product - and naturally, it shares a large portion of the code with the Pro. Whenever we can, we strive to respond to Lite-related part of our forums, especially when it's about bug reports. Still, Lite is used on "AS IS" basis - while for the Pro version there is guaranteed support during 30-day trial as well as within 1 year upon purchasing a license (maintenance contract can be prolonged, of course). We do take this seriously, all support requests are answered within hours if not minutes. Maybe not exactly a feature of the product, but I'm sure a lot of our customers chose the Pro because of this.
If you're only dealing with email, WebMail Lite or Roundcube would work nicely... Until you have to deal with multiple email accounts. In WebMail Pro, you can add any number of accounts, switch between them with a dropdown tool - and with Unified Inbox feature, you can merge several inboxes into the single list of email messages.
Additionally to mail and contacts, Pro offers calendar with reminders and tasks, as well as files with the ability to generate public links for those.
Aside from desktop-friendly version of web interface, we provide mobile apps for accessing emails, contacts and files. Though personally, I prefer using mobile version of WebMail Pro interface - it's automatically activated on web browser of iOS or Android smartphone.
And yes, using DAV you can sync your contacts, calendars and files between all sorts of devices and platforms. On many systems, including iOS, DAV is something available out-of-box. And if you prefer Exchange ActiveSync - WebMail Pro can do that, too, using ActiveServer premium addon.
It's not unusual for businesses to be willing to adjust the visual look of their email platform with their logos and such. WebMail Pro does that with Branding features.
Lastly I would point out that WebMail Pro is focused on personal-level features - but if you're looking for a groupware solution with sharing contacts, calendars and files, syncing data with Outlook, system that can be integrated with online document editor and chat platform - take a look at Aurora Corporate.
