To select multiple messages, try to click necessary ones in the list holding Shift or Ctrl, similar to standard windows GUI.

That does work but how about just making the checkbox visiable again in the blank space on the left?

Have you thought any more about this? It should be a simple trigger shouldn't it? It's on without preview and off with preview. Maybe make it an option in both? It column is there already.
