In this thread, you mention a global setting that enables passing smtp error messages to the user. However, I could find no relevant information in the product's documentation.

Would you kindly provide some more information on this feature?

Sure, as per this documentation page you need to add the following item to array defined in data/settings/config.php file:

'labs.webmail.display-server-error-information' => true,
