That's not configurable. If the message contains read receipt request, you need to click the link at the top of that message.

Yes, it's quite simple to change font size there. For the skin you use, in skins/skin_name/styles.css file, locate the following:

font-size: 8pt;

I've set it 14pt, looks good and big enough to me :-)
